London Midland has become the latest West Midlands based firm to become an official partner of the Birmingham Big Art Project.

The Big Art Project is aiming to create an impressive new Birmingham landmark in the current Eastside City Park near Millennium Point.  This giant installation will sit outside the new High-Speed Railway station (HS2). It will be a major destination and arrival point in the city as a new ‘Curzon Square’ is to be created over time around the artwork.

Commenting on the new partnership London Midland Managing Director, Patrick Verwer said:

“The Birmingham Big Art Project will become a focal point for the local community and visitors to Birmingham alike.  London Midland carries hundreds of thousands of passengers across the West Midlands every week and our trains pass either side of the site of the Big Art Project. We are delighted to be sponsoring the creation of this exciting new landmark”

London Midland’s sponsorship includes providing rail travel for the artists working on the project.

Glyn Pitchford, Chairman of The Birmingham Big Art Project:

“Our project is a branding exercise for Birmingham and this region. We are looking to identify and commission a substantial and permanent public artwork for the city centre of such import that it will elevate Birmingham onto the world’s cultural stage. This helps our local economy in terms of increased tourism, inward investment and greater employment opportunities.

“We need to raise £2.5m by 2018 if the Birmingham Big Art Project is to be successful and we are now seeing the business community getting behind this to help us realise this ambition. London Midland is one such business which has spotted the opportunity which our project will bring to this region and their travel business. Other sponsorship opportunities are available to those businesses which see benefits accruing by supporting us.”

The maquettes or models of five proposed sculptures are now on display in Millennium Point where the public are encouraged to vote for their favourite.
